Challenge

How might we combine nature and design to create wearable art, in order to bring light to the significance of native floral species and their impact on our health and the environment?

I created a collection of statement accessories in which every piece (earring, necklace, bracelet, etc.) has its own story inspired by the floral species of New York (or the Northeastern Region of the United States). My mission through this collection was to educate, spread awareness and inspire users to care for and know more about the environment around them and its significance.

Mission

EDEN was created to have a changing partnership program through which we collaborate with certain organizations for individual projects, to create a symbiotic relationship that results in a stronger force directed towards similar goals.

Why?

To inspire individuals to grow more plants in and around their homes, and to inform them of the importance of these particular species.

How?

Using the organic forms of the species to create body accessories out of non-toxic, sustainable materials.

With?

A seed-pack and instruction pamphlet on how to grow the plant it represents along with its history, significance and uses.

Ideation

Material Used

Natural Cold Porcelain Clay is a perfect substitute for toxic polymer clay and allows for even finer detail and ease of sculpting. It's also incredibly inexpensive and super simple to make. The clay is air-dried so no need for baking and it dries to a light weight, luminous, stone-like texture. It is sustainable, homemade, pliable, non-toxic and durable.

Takeaways

  • Engaging with a community, conducting fieldwork and spending time in the environment that I was designing for was a wonderful experience for me.

  • After its completion, I presented the project to NYBG's Gift Shop and asked them if it's something they would be interested in keeping at the store. Although they expressed preliminary interest, unfortunately we couldn't see it through because the pandemic hit right after.
